It was a sad day for Vancouverites when Save-On Meats closed its doors nearly three years ago. Thankfully, this Gastown institution was given a second lease on life, re-opening to the public June 22 of last year.
We all had high hopes that Mark Brand’s venture would return Save-On Meats to its former glory under longtime owner, Al DesLauriers. It didn’t disappoint.
Approaching the first anniversary since its million-dollar facelift, Save-On Meats is serving up classic comfort food executed to a tee!
Think a bowl of creamy, piping hot tomato soup, ooey-gooey grilled cheese, juicy burgers, and milkshakes with an optional “adult” twist.
Not only was the soup delicious on its own, but it actually doubled as a dip for the mozzerella and cheddar-filled grilled cheese, much like a homemade ketchup.
For a juicy all-beef patty, just-crisp bacon and sharp cheddar cheese enveloped in a housemade brioche bun, look no further than this restaurant’s namesake burger. Drool-worthy!
And to wash all of that down, you’d be crazy not to order a milkshake. My personal recommendation is the vanilla milkshake kicked up a notch with 1/2 oz Kahlua and 1/2 oz Baileys, but the chocolate shake with bourbon doesn’t disappoint either. The triple thick shakes, made with ice cream whipped up in house, are truly decadent: no need for dessert after one of these, trust me!
As always, wishing you a stamp of culinary royalty in all of your dining endeavours! xx
