Guilty Pleasure of the Week: Homemade Cinnamon Buns

It’s that time of year when we enjoy nothing more than curling up by the fireplace with a hot drink (think a mocha with peppermint schnapps and whipped cream) and a treat to curb those winter blues.

The ideal Christmas indulgence in my family has to hit a few notes: sweet with a hint of warm spices, crisp on the outside while delightfully soft on the inside, and of course fresh out of the oven.

I can think of nothing better than a gooey homemade cinnamon bun.

Using a yeast-based recipe for the dough (*requiring a bread machine*) is time-consuming but well worth your time. The result, as opposed to using a self-rising flour, is a much lighter cinnamon bun.

Further, to optimize the gooey factor, drizzle corn syrup into the base of the pan along with Becel (butter or margarine will do as well), cinnamon, and brown sugar.

No time to whip up a batch of your own? Stop in at one of these bakeries on your lunch break or drive home from work!

1. Solly’s Bagelry offers a cinnamon roll in a similar style to my family’s recipe so I am of course a fan; it is so moist, the dough so flaky and buttery, no icing is needed.

2. Grounds for Coffee offers what many consider to be the best cinnamon bun available for purchase; if you want a cinnamon bun that eats like a meal, albeit a sweet one, this is for you. I suggest ordering one with icing (it is optional), as it greatly adds to the famous ooey-gooey consistency. They come in at $3.75 for one, but I’d say they’re worth every penny.

3. I’ve saved the best for last, and these are worth a road-trip in themselves! Sold in four locations at Sun Peaks Resort (for the best view, stop in at Sunburst Lodge halfway up the mountain) and baked fresh daily at 10am, these famous sinfully delicious rolls are large enough to feed a family of four. The thin layers of buttery, flaky dough and the sweet gooey syrupy drizzle on top is enough to make the 5 hour drive worth it, even if you’re not a mountain enthusiast!

As always, wishing you a stamp of culinary royalty in all of your dining and snacking endeavors! xx

people who don’t share their recipes are idiots, really, why would you care if someone else made “your” cinnamon buns. Real chefs share

    • Bobby, thank you for taking the time to reply. First of all, I do not claim to be a chef, as my culinary training does not come from an institute; I am an avid and passionate home cook taught by my mom and grandmother. Secondly, the post is about where to find my favourite cinnamon buns, not a how-to for my family’s recipe; I love to share recipes with those who read my blog, but unfortunately I am not the original creator of my family cinnamon bun recipe, which prevents me from freely sharing it here. I would also like to note my offer is still on the table to troubleshoot a recipe you’re using, to help you achieve a better cinnamon bun.
      Sincerely,
      Alyssa

Would it be possible to get your family recipe? I’ve been trying to make one similar to Solly’s, but everytime it comes out with too much dough. Thx!

    • Well, if it was only my recipe I would be glad to, but I would have to get approval from a few family members. Sorry for not being able to help, but send me your recipe, and maybe I can help get you closer to the perfect cinnamon bun!
